Getting a container into a Kingston driveway
Kingston is two different jobs depending on which end we're headed for. The newer building out by the commuter rail and the retail end has wide roads and driveways with room to spare. Those are among the easiest deliveries we do anywhere. Down toward Kingston Bay it changes: Rocky Nook and Gray's Beach have compact lots, mature trees and some narrow local streets, and the older part of Kingston Center has short driveways that were never cut for a truck this size. Near the Jones River I'm watching for low branches and whether there's room to square the truck up with the mouth of the drive. A driveway can be plenty long and still be one we can't line up on. Gray's Beach gets busy enough in the summer to move a delivery earlier in the day.

- Will your truck fit on the streets in Rocky Nook?
- Usually, but which street and which driveway makes the difference there. The lanes are narrow and the trees have grown in over them. Send me photographs of the road, the driveway entrance and where you want it to sit and I'll tell you before the day rather than have the driver find out on arrival.
- Can you still deliver near Gray's Beach in the middle of summer?
- Yes. What gets in the way is the cars along the road, not the season. By August both sides of some of those streets are taken and there's nowhere to line the truck up. Booking a Gray's Beach job first thing means we arrive before the street fills.
- My house is in the older part of Kingston Center with a short driveway. Is that a problem?
- Not on its own. Those houses were built long before anyone was delivering containers to them, and we handle it every week. The question I need answered first is how much room the truck has to swing in off the street, because that decides more than the length of the driveway does.
